Stronghold Finder: Find Any Stronghold in Minecraft

You throw an eye of Ender. You run after it. You throw another one. An hour later, you are still wandering around with no idea how close you actually are. Sound familiar? Finding a stronghold the old way is genuinely one of the most frustrating things in Minecraft, and players search for a better method every single day.

That is exactly why this tool exists. Our Minecraft stronghold finder uses your world seed to show you the exact location of every stronghold on a map before you even leave your base. No wasted eyes. Just enter your seed, pick your version, and get the coordinates. It works on both Java and Bedrock, including PS4 players on Bedrock Edition.

How to Use the Stronghold Finder

Using this tool does not take much time, even if you have never done it before.

Find your world seed

In single player, just open chat and type /seed. Your seed appears as a long number. Copy it exactly. In multiplayer, you need operator permissions to use the /seed command, so ask your server admin if you do not have access.

Enter the seed and version

Paste your seed into the seed field at the top of this page. Then select your Minecraft edition and the exact version you use. This part matters more than most people realize. If you started your world on an older version and updated later, select the version that generated the area you are looking at, not your current version.

Read the map

Hit Go. The map will display markers for all the strongholds in your world. Zoom in to see them clearly. If you don’t know how to read the map, read our Minecraft seed map guide.

Get your coordinates

Click any stronghold marker. A pop-up shows you the X and Z coordinates. The Y coordinate is not shown because strongholds always sit in a similar depth range, and your best bet is simply to dig down from those X and Z coordinates until you hit one.

Head there in-game

Travel to those coordinates and dig down in a staircase pattern. Once you reach around Y 30 to 40, start branching out in short tunnels. You will hit stone brick walls before long

Best Seeds with Easy Strongholds (Java Edition 1.21)

Best Seeds with Easy Strongholds

Some seeds put a stronghold within walking distance of spawn. These are handy for speedruns, or just if you want to get to the End fast without a long journey.

Here are a few worth trying on Java 1.21:

  • Seed -1000000 puts a stronghold close to spawn with a good biome mix nearby.
  • Seed 2151901553968352745 is a classic speedrun seed that has been used competitively, with a stronghold at coordinates most speedrunners know by heart.
  • Seed -4379469131957062683 is known for a stronghold sitting beneath a village, which makes early game looting and End progression line up nicely.

Always verify these using the stronghold finder above, and match the version to Java 1.21 before you head out.

The village finder and biome finder pair well here when you want to plan a full run from spawn.

Java vs Bedrock: What Changes?

A lot of players pick the wrong edition in the tool and then wonder why the coordinates lead nowhere. Here is a quick breakdown so you do not make the same mistake.

PS4 runs Bedrock Edition. If you play on PS4 and want to use this stronghold finder, just select Bedrock Edition and choose the right version number. The tool handles the rest exactly the same way.

You can check other Bedrock structures too. The nether fortress finder and bastion remnant finder both work with Bedrock seeds as well.

Tips for Reaching the Stronghold Alive

Reaching the stronghold alive is its own challenge. The route down is full of surprises, and a lot of players die before they even find it.

  1. Bring full iron armor at a minimum. Food is critical since you will be underground for a while. A water bucket saves your life more than once if you fall into lava or need to pillar down quickly. Carry plenty of torches too.
  2. Set your spawn point with a bed somewhere near the stronghold coordinates before you start digging. If something goes wrong, you respawn close instead of starting over from your base.
  3. Dig in a staircase pattern, not straight down. You hit fewer unexpected drops into caves that way.
  4. Watch out for infested stone blocks. They look like regular stone, cobblestone, or stone bricks, but they break very slowly and spawn silverfish when broken.
  5. Mark your path inside the stronghold. Rooms loop back on each other, and it is very easy to spend 20 minutes wandering the same three corridors. A trail of torches placed on one side of the wall keeps you oriented.

6. The ancient city finder is also worth checking before you go too deep. Ancient Cities generate at Y negative 51 and lower, and you do not want to stumble into one unprepared.

Is There a Nether Stronghold?

No. Strongholds do not generate in the Nether. If you searched for “nether stronghold finder”, you might be thinking of a Nether Fortress, which is a completely different structure.

Nether Fortresses are large, dark brick structures in the Nether dimension. They spawn blazes, which drop blaze rods. Without blaze rods, you cannot craft Eyes of Ender, and you cannot reach the stronghold in the first place. So in a way, finding the Nether Fortress comes first.

Use the Nether Fortress Finder on this site to locate Nether Fortresses by seed. Same tool, same process.

Does the End Have a Stronghold?

The End dimension does not contain strongholds. Strongholds are in the Overworld. They contain the End Portal that takes you to the End. So if you searched “end stronghold finder,” this tool is exactly what you need.

Once you get through the End Portal and defeat the Ender Dragon, you open access to the outer islands. That is where End Cities and End Ships spawn, which carry some of the best loot in the game, including Elytra. Check out the endcity finder to plan that part of your run.

What Is a Stronghold in Minecraft?

A stronghold is an underground structure made mostly of stone bricks. It generates deep in the Overworld, usually somewhere between Y 30 and Y 40. The whole reason players want to find one is simple: it contains the End Portal. That portal is the only way to reach the End dimension and fight the Ender Dragon. There is no other route.

Strongholds are big, maze-like, and very easy to get lost in. They have libraries, prison cells, fountains, and corridors that seem to stretch on forever. Most players only care about one room, though: the End Portal room, which holds up to 12 End Portal frame blocks.

In Java Edition, each world can have up to 128 strongholds. They generate in rings spread out from the center of the world. The first ring of strongholds sits roughly 1,408 to 2,688 blocks away from the origin point. Each outer ring has more strongholds and sits farther out. Bedrock Edition also has multiple strongholds, but the ring distances and counts work a little differently depending on your version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the stronghold finder work on PS4?

Yes. PS4 uses Bedrock Edition. Select Bedrock in the tool and choose your version number. The finder works the same way as it does on any other platform.

How many strongholds are in a Minecraft world?

Java Edition worlds have up to 128 strongholds spread across several rings around the world center. Bedrock Edition varies. Some older Bedrock versions only generate 3 strongholds per world, while newer versions generate more.

What Y level is the stronghold at?

Strongholds generate between roughly Y 30 and Y 40. The finder gives you X and Z coordinates. Once you are at that location, dig down in a staircase pattern and start branching out at Y 30.

Can I use this tool without a seed?

No, a seed is required for the finder to work. If you do not have access to your seed, use the eye of Ender method described above to triangulate the location manually in-game.

Is there a stronghold in the Nether or the End?

No. Strongholds only exist in the Overworld. The Nether has Nether Fortresses, and the End has End Cities and End Ships. Use the correct finder tool for each one.

How many eyes of Ender do I need to find a stronghold?

You only need 2 to 4 to locate the stronghold using the triangulation method. Keep in mind each throw has a 20% chance to shatter, so bring at least 16 total. You need up to 12 to activate the End Portal once you find it.
